The Eternal Hero: Every Link's Reincarnation in Zelda Timeline
When the official Legend of Zelda timeline finally escaped Nintendo's internal vault, it changed how fans understood the green-clad hero forever. The release of Hyrule Historia revealed that Link is not simply a recurring name passed down through generations, but a spirit bound to an endless cycle. According to the events of Skyward Sword, the Demon King Demise placed a curse on the hero and the goddess's bloodline, ensuring that Link, Zelda, and his own malice would be reborn time and again. In 2026, that branching timeline remains one of gaming's most beloved lore puzzles, and every incarnation of Link carries a small piece of the same unyielding courage.

The story begins not in Hyrule, but above the clouds.
The Original Hero of Skyloft
Long before the Kingdom of Hyrule was founded, a young knight-in-training lived in the floating village of Skyloft. This Link was an aspiring swordsman and a close companion to Zelda, the daughter of the academy's headmaster. When a dark tornado pulled Zelda from the sky, Link leaped after her without hesitation. His journey carried him through ancient ruins and battles against the flamboyant demon Ghirahim, and finally into a confrontation with Demise himself.

By defeating Demise, Link saved the land that would become Hyrule, but he also triggered the curse that would define the entire series. From that moment on, his soul was destined to return whenever evil threatened the Triforce.
The Picori Festival and the Four Sword
After the events of Skyward Sword, the fledgling Kingdom of Hyrule entered an age of peace known as the Era of Prosperity. The people of Hyrule celebrated the Picori, a tiny race also called the Minish, at an annual festival. According to legend, the Picori had once saved Hyrule during its infancy. But the festivities hid a danger. The evil sorcerer Vaati tried to steal the sacred Picori Blade and turned Princess Zelda to stone. A young boy named Link appeared, took up the legendary sword, and set out to stop him.

Decades later, Vaati was resurrected. This time he began kidnapping every young girl in Hyrule, hoping to imprison Princess Zelda once again. A new hero claimed the Four Sword, a blade with a strange power. When Link wielded it, he split into four identical versions of himself. The four heroes worked together, defeated Vaati, and then returned the sword to its resting place. The four Links became one once more.

The Hero of Time and the Great Split
The peace that followed Four Swords did not last. A terrible war broke out between Hyrule and the Gerudo. During the chaos, a refugee mother fled into the Kokiri Forest carrying an infant child. That child was Link. The Great Deku Tree took them in and raised the boy among the forest spirits. When Link came of age, the Deku Tree told him that he was the Hero of Legend, destined to travel through time and stop Ganon from obtaining the Triforce.

This version of Link became one of the most important in the entire canon. His actions at the end of Ocarina of Time did not produce a single future. Instead, they split the timeline into separate branches, each giving rise to new heroes and new disasters.
The Fallen Hero's Long Journey
In the branch where the Hero of Time was defeated, the story continued with a new Link in A Link to the Past. This young adventurer was contacted telepathically by Princess Zelda after she was imprisoned in Hyrule Castle. He rescued her, defeated Ganon, and restored the Dark World to the Sacred Realm. But his adventures did not end there.

This same Link later traveled to the lands of Holodrum and Labrynna during the events of Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons. He also found himself shipwrecked on the mysterious Koholint Island in Link's Awakening. Unlike most incarnations, this hero's spirit was tested across multiple quests rather than a single legend.
A New Incarnation in an Old Hyrule
Years later, a new Hero appeared in the same Hyrule as A Link to the Past. A Link Between Worlds featured fresh incarnations of Link and Zelda, even though attentive players could spot paintings in Hyrule Castle that told the story of the earlier hero. This Link later went on to star in Tri Force Heroes, proving that the cycle could produce a hero whose courage was expressed through teamwork as much as swordsmanship.

The Classic Dual Adventures
The first two games in the series also featured the same Link across multiple years, though not the same Princess Zelda. The very first Link that players met back in 1987 was a young adventurer who encountered a desperate Impa. She was searching for a hero to collect the Triforce and rescue Princess Zelda. Link answered the call.

Several years later, when Link was sixteen years old, the Triforce mysteriously appeared on the back of his hand. He sought guidance from Impa once more. She told him of the Tragedy of Princess Zelda I, a princess cursed into an eternal slumber centuries before. Link set off to break the curse and finally release her.
The Child Timeline: From Termina to Twilight
In another branch of the timeline, the Hero of Time returned to his childhood after defeating Ganon. He warned Princess Zelda about Ganondorf's intentions and then departed Hyrule for his own safety. While traveling through a mysterious forest, he was pulled into the doomed land of Termina, where a falling moon threatened to destroy everything.

With Zelda now aware of Ganondorf's betrayal, the Gerudo king was captured and sentenced to execution. But he possessed the Triforce of Power, and the execution failed. As a last resort, the Seven Sages sealed him away in the Twilight Realm. Centuries later, a young boy named Link accidentally wandered into that realm. The displaced Twilight Princess recognized something in him immediately: he was the Hero of Legend destined to stop Ganondorf once more.

Across every branch and every era, the spirit of the hero endures. The names may change, the lands may shift, and the faces may be different, but the courage remains. The curse spoken by Demise echoes through every generation, and as long as evil rises, a green-clad hero will always appear to answer the call.
